Looking for the quickest and easiest way to delegate account management, creation and self-service tasks in Active Directory, Exchange, eDirectory, GroupWise, SAP, Oracle, PeopleSoft and other systems to non-technical staff?

eControl Overview

Delegated Management, Provisioning and Self-Service

Omni eControl allows administrators to quickly, easily and securely delegate routine, yet time-consuming, management, provisioning and self-service tasks in Active Directory, Exchange, eDirectory, GroupWise, SAP, Oracle, PeopleSoft and other systems.

What differentiates eControl from the standard Microsoft, Novell and other administration tools – MMC, Task Pads, Exchange Management Console, ConsoleOne and iManager – is that eControl was designed from the gound up with non-technical users in mind. eControl’s Web 2.0 interface is simple to use and can be accessed from any computer.

eControl users do not require special permissions, administrator rights, RDP sessions or VPN tunnels to carry out their delegated tasks. Rather than using multiple different application-specific consoles to manage and provision accounts, eControl provides a single, simplified, unified management console – to manage even the largest and most complex enterprise systems.

Figure 1:  Network and security administrators use eControl’s web-based administration interface to quickly and easily delegate tasks to help desk and service desk operators, HR staff and non-technical users. eControl provides full control over what tasks can be carried out and where those tasks can be applied (search and task authority).

Get More “Strategic Time”

Network and security administrators purchase eControl because it gives them back “strategic time.”

eControl frees senior IT staff from time consuming, day-to-day management tasks (resetting passwords, managing mail groups and distribution lists, releasing intruder lockout, provisioning accounts, etc.). Instead, non-technical staff are empowered to carry out these tasks – with NO special permissions and NO access to proprietary account administration applications like Microsoft Management Console, Exchange Management Console, ConsoleOne, iManager and other system management applications.  Account management concerns related to WAN bandwith, distance, time zones, RDP sessions, VPN connections, IT staff hiring and training costs, increased help desk call volume, and security are overcome.

Simple, secure, fully-audited

All changes made in eControl are written to an audit log for administrator oversight and enhanced compliance. Administrators can use eControl Audit Viewer and Reporting to quickly identify and report on who carried out which tasks and when. Users are restricted to only being able to carry out the tasks they have been assigned – in the specific containers they have been assigned. This prevents users from unintentionally or intentionally snooping or performing unauthorised actions.

Use eControl to enhance network security and compliance by removing all administrator and supervisor rights from your front-line staff and removing them from all groups with administrator access. Then even if they have access to launch administrator applications, they won’t be able to intentionally or unintentionally cause problems on your systems.

Designed for Non-technical Users

eControl is designed for non-technical users to be assigned to carry out routine management and provisioning tasks from a browser. These users include:

  • Help desk operators
  • Service desk operators
  • Junior network administrators
  • HR staff
  • Office managers and secretarial staff
  • Lab and department assistants
  • Teachers and clerical staff
  • Outsourced help desk staff
  • And others

Most administrators start their eControl deployment by delegating a very specific set of tasks such as password resets and account status management to a small group of people. Once administrators and support staff have experienced the power, simplicity, and time savings of eControl, the list of delegated tasks and users who can carry out those tasks quickly grows.

In fact, administrators often end up using eControl rather than the standard administration applications for many tasks because of its speed, accessibility and simplicity.

eControl’s Key Benefits

eControl delivers a Web 2.0 unified management console that replaces Microsoft Management Console, Task Pads, Exchange Management Console, ConsoleOne, iManager and other application management consoles for delegated management, provisioning and self-service tasks.
eControl frees administrators to have time to focus on strategic, higher-level tasks and empowers less-expensive staff to carry out daily, routine tasks.
eControl saves on hiring and training costs. Non-IT staff can be trained in as little as 20 minutes – and they do not require any knowledge of directory or mail systems. This helps reduce help desk call volume and IT bottlenecks.
eControl provides granular control over users’ search and task authority across multiple systems. NO special permissions and NO access to administrator applications are required.
eControl simplifies the management of mixed and multiple Exchange, Active Directory, eDirectory, GroupWise and other systems that result from mergers and acquisitions.
eControl serves as an ideal precursor and complement to any identity management implementation for delegated, role-based services. Compared to MIIS, Novell Identity Manager or Oracle Identity Manager, the process to install and configure eControl is much simpler and quicker.

eControl Future-proofs Your Investment

eControl future-proofs your investment by providing compatibility for the following directory and mail systems.

How eControl Connects to Your Systems

Omni eControl connects directly to your mail, directory or LOB systems via native API, web service and/or LDAP calls. This enables support staff to manage mixed and multiple directories, email systems and LOB systems from a single web interface.

Control Users’ Search and Task Authority

During the eControl installation and configuration process, administrators create user profiles with specific search and task authority. These profiles are then assigned to groups in your directory.  Any member of the group can carry out the assigned tasks in the designatued OUs.

Figure 1.  In the education scenario above, the network administrator has delegated tasks to teachers, technology coordinators and district help desk operators. You can see that teachers are limited to a small number of users (e.g., students in their classroom). Technology coordinators are responsible for all student accounts in their school. District help desk operators are able to carry out a broader set of tasks at the district level.
